The lady behind the lens

Hi, I'm Kristy MacKenzie!

Thanks for dropping by to learn a little bit about me!

Anyone that knows me will tell you that I never go anywhere without my camera. My photography obsession began at a very young age. I was easily influenced by my grandmother who was an avid photographer. Since the moment when I got my hands on a polaroid camera, I was completely and utterly captivated. At an early age of 10, I was doing photo shoots with my friends and I remember the anticipation of getting to see the photos once they were developed – it was so exciting! Little did I know back then that I was a photographer in the making.

Straight out of high school I hit the road and completed an Arts degree at the University of Calgary. I never really knew what I wanted to do, and it was really quite terrifying! All I knew was that I really liked working with people and that I loved to travel. I ended up working in Human Resources for numerous oil and gas companies, and then went on to continue my career at the Government of Alberta. Even though I enjoyed my work in HR, I always felt like something was missing – my creative itch got stronger and stronger. After meeting an incredibly talented wedding photographer, I decided to start taking photos of people every chance I could which lead me to 2013 when I finally took the plunge and started my own photography business. I started out by taking courses and then asking photographers I knew to let me tag along. Before I knew it, my business was booming and I quit my “big kid” job and decided to become my own boss – it was the best decision I ever made!

Photography has taught me a lot about myself and about life in general. It has allowed me to see beauty in every day life, and it allows me to meet so many incredible people and watch them go through all of life’s amazing milestones. I’ve been lucky enough to document weddings in Jamaica, Mexico, Dominican Republic and New Zealand, and also was fortunate enough to shoot a proposal in New York City!

I am proud to say I am married to an Edmonton Firefighter, and we’ve been going strong since 2010. We were friends in high school, but didn’t start dating until 5 years after! We got a dog in 2012, bought our forever home in 2015, got engaged in 2016, got married in 2017, honeymooned in New Zealand and renovated our house in 2018, and we are expecting a baby girl in Jan 2019! He forever changed my life and I am so grateful. I feel like going through these milestones myself has better equipped me to share yours with you and helps me to know exactly what you’re looking for!

On a lighter note, here are some things that you may not know about me:

  • I have a black english lab who eats everything she possibly can. She broke into the garbage for 5 years and then just stopped randomly!
  • I love to travel – my bestie and I lived in a van for a month in Australia in 2008, surviving off of cheese and chunky soup! My hubby and I also lived in a van for a few weeks in New Zealand on our honeymoon in 2018!
  • I like to cry – I’ll probably cry during your wedding ceremony.
  • I may just be the clumsiest person you will ever meet. I once fell backwards while shooting a wedding ceremony exit – highly embarrassing!
  • I make friends everywhere I go, a collector of people so they say. Let’s be pals!
  • While I may seem quite extroverted, public speaking scares the poop out of me! This is something I’m currently working on with my presentations at workshops.
  • I am a stealer of socks and towels (my hubby can testify to this!).
  • I am the biggest cheese lover you’ll ever meet.
  • At all times I have music blaring in my house – music makes me happy.
  • I attempt at getting a hug from most people that I meet. I usually succeed.
What are you waiting for? Let's make something beautiful together.

Love. Love. Love.

My Achievements

I have been lucky enough to have many of my wedding photographs featured in publications such as Blush Magazine, Bridal Fantasy, Confetti Wedding Magazine, Hitched, Rock and Roll Bride, Calgary Bride, Hey Bride, The Edmonton Sun and so on.

In early 2016 I was named one of Canada’s Top 30 Photographers Under 30 by the Canada Photo Convention! In 2018, I co-hosted the first ever Real Adventure Workshop (RAW) in Drumheller, and we are putting on another workshop this May at the Lodge At Panther River! RAW is a wedding photography workshop and I am so proud to be able to teach what I’ve learned with many other incredible photographers! To check out the workshop, go to:
